

Each wine assessment will be worth up to 30 points, as detailed on the tasting grid. Using the SWE Wine Tasting Grid-which will be provided and available for use during the exam-candidates will be asked to provide a written analysis and tasting note of each wine. A combined score of 76% or better is required to pass this segment, with a minimum of 65 required on the multiple-choice and 11 on the essay. The theory portion of the exam consists of 85 multiple-choice questions and one essay that tests the candidate’s ability to format information coherently and concisely to a target audience. One hour is allotted for the multiple-choice section with an additional one hour provided for the essay. They will also receive a certificate (suitable for framing) and a CWE lapel pin.

In addition, all parts of the CWE exam will continue to be offered “in person” at specific locations and times as noted on the SWE website, Exams and Seminars. These include Pearson VUE Testing Centers and at-home, online proctoring for theory as well as virtual options for the tasting exams. Candidates may purchase and attempt the theory and tasting sections of the exam separately. There are currently several available options for the delivery of the CWE exam.
